After months of uncertainty, the Port Macquarie full IRONMAN announces its go-ahead in May 2021.
With over 1000 athletes competing, many are eager to secure a spot in the 2021 Hawaii World Championships.

It will be the first IRONMAN event to commence since the pandemic put a halt to all IRONMAN races last year.
For World Championship Triathlete, Beven Ernst, the return of the event is exciting and nerve-racking after a year of waiting to be back out on the course.

“A whole two years since the last event gives athletes double the length of time between usual events, meaning more time to train both physically and mentally,” Beven says.
Completing the 3.8km swim, 180.2km bike and 42.2km run in under 12 hours requires a lot of physical skill, but most importantly “mental determination,” he says.
Beven anticipates that this will put a lot of athletes to the test when competing again for the first time in over two years.

He has competed in the event over fifteen times, seven of those qualifying for the World Championships himself, and has previously trained five other World Championship qualifying athletes.
With 10 athletes currently training with Beven for the event, it is likely to see another one of his athletes qualify for the 2021 Kona World Championships.

Beven has over 25 years of experience in the coaching field and encourages anyone that is thinking of giving it a crack to attend the event and witness the atmosphere of the race.
“It's truly amazing, the feeling of crossing that line and hearing ‘you are an IRONMAN’, it's something I wish everyone could experience. That feeling of accomplishment is like no other,” he says.
The race offers 1800 athletes the chance to compete but also encourages people to come and experience the atmosphere with free public access to spectate.
For anyone who is interested in helping out with the event, organisers are currently in search of volunteers to assist with athlete check-in, transitions, aid and recovery stations.
