Netflix Original, All Quiet on the Western Front, led the way with a total of nine nominations, the second most nominated title behind Everything Everywhere All at Once with 11 nominations.

The war film led the British Academy Film Awards as the most nominated title earlier this year, so its Oscar nomination tally comes as no surprise.

German director, Edward Berger, says, “Making our history, background, and attitude towards war (was) the driving force behind the movie. I wanted to make a movie that felt like, in order to make it, you would've had to have grown up in Germany.”

Next off the rank was this year's mystery megastar, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery.

In 2020, Rian Johnson’s Knives Out received a nomination for Best Original Screenplay and has lived up to expectations this year with a nomination for Best-adapted Screenplay.

After falling short of a Best International Feature nomination, the Mexican drama, Bardo, still managed to scrape in a surprise single nomination for Darius Khondji’s avant-garde cinematography.

Another notable Oscar nod included Cuban-Spanish actress, Ana de Armas’, nomination for Best Actress in a Leading Role in the Marilyn Monroe biopic, Blonde.

Known for their flawless execution of short documentary series, Netflix also landed two nominations for Best Documentary Short for The Elephant Whisperers and The Martha Mitchell Effect with one nomination each.

The Elephant Whisperers director Kartiki Gonsalves says, “It’s such an honour to have an Indian Indigenous documentary from the heart of South India acknowledged across the world.”

Netflix secured another two nominations for The Sea Beast and Guillermo’s Del Toro Pinocchio and join each other in the race for Best Animated Feature.

One Netflix favourite tipped for the Oscar spotlight that didn't make the cut was Noah Baumbach’s White Noise starring Adam Driver. Although critics dubbed it a flop, Baumbach’s work is routinely hot Oscar property so his failure to impress the Academy this year came as a shock.

Despite trending in Netflix’s top 10 for weeks, another favourite tipped for success that was overlooked was Sally El Hosaini’s sports drama, The Swimmers.

Even though Netflix fell short of its astounding 27 Oscar nominations last year, they continue to dominate as one of the biggest streaming giants recognised by the Academy.

On Tuesday the official Netflix account tweeted, “Congrats to everyone involved with our 16 Academy Award nominations this morning - we couldn't be more proud!!”

Jimmy Kimmel will host the 95th Academy Awards ceremony on March 13 at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angles and broadcast live on ABC from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. EST.
